natural history painter, sketcher, solicitor, public servant and entomologist, second son of Thomas and Martha Wilson , came to South Australia in 1838. He made sketches of Adelaide soon afterwards, including one of the family’s prefabricated wooden home in North Adelaide. On 2 February 1846 he sketched his parents’ second and more elaborate residence in East Terrace. In September Algernon (or Ally, as he was known in the family) was appointed to the staff of the South Australian Supreme Court, becoming registrar of probates and commissioner of inland revenue in March 1858. He married Matilda King in 1860. Wilson’s main hobby was entomology and he made many watercolour sketches of insects in his collection. He also published several articles on natural history in general, and entomology in particular, under the pseudonym 'Amator Naturae’. He helped found the Philosophical Society of South Australia in January 1853 and was elected a fellow of the British Linnaean Society in 1860. Wilson died at his home, Cwm Hir Lodge, Bridge Street, Kensington (SA) on 20 June 1884.
