As commander of the armed forces in New Zealand in the late 1850's, most of his work is held in that country. The National Library of Australia holds two works by him, both views of Hobart Town.

sketcher and army officer, was born in England. He began his military career as an ensign in 1828 and had served in the West Indies and North America before coming to Auckland in 1847. Almost immediately transferred to Wellington, he was stationed there until September 1857. He was commander of the armed forces in New Zealand in 1858-60, then retired to England. Major-General Gold died at Dover in 1871. Major collections of his New Zealand watercolours are held in that country as well as in the National Library of Australia, which also holds his two known Australian works: views of Hobart Town dated December 1846 and 1847, made on his initial Australasian voyage.
