English marine painter who specialised in the subject of ships. While painting and exhibiting extensively in London, a number of works were exhibited in South Australia and one presented to the Royal Society of Tasmania for its maritime significance.
painter, was the 'C. Taylor’ who painted French Mail Steamer off Deal and a view of The [English] Downs , lent by Mr Alexander to the 1859 exhibition of the South Australian Society of Arts. He was also the 'C. Taylor’ who executed a large competent, undated, watercolour The City of Hobart (Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery), later presented to the Royal Society of Tasmania by Mr Gregory. The City of Hobart, the first ship built for the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company, left Gravesend on 2 April 1854 and arrived at Port Hobart on 9 July. The artist was undoubtedly the English marine painter Charles Taylor junior, who exhibited seventy-five paintings mainly of ships at major London exhibitions between 1841 and 1883. Hence the painting must have been done before the ship left England.
