Born at Kunatjarrayi and a member of the Warlpiri language group, Charlie Marshall began painting for Papunya Tula in the early ’80s. He was residing at Mt Liebig at the time and Daphne Williams had taken over the running of the Papunya Tula Artists company. His usual subjects were Witchetty Grub, Wallaby, Man and Woman and Centipede Dreamings around the area of Kunatjarrayi. Nicknamed 'Whitlam’ following the then Australian Prime Minister’s visit to the region.
