Christopher Van Der Craats is a late 20th century Melbourne painter and cartoonist best known for his series "The Adventures of Henry Maltravers".

painter and cartoonist, studied painting at Preston Institute of Technology in 1975-77. He exhibits at Pinacotheca Gallery, Richmond and is known for his cartoon series, The Adventures of Henry Maltravers , e.g. 'But is it Art?’ – man looking at abstract painting (illus. McGrath, 19). He states:

“The adventures of Henry Maltravers are, for me, an amusing pastime and using the comic strip format is a substitute for making films.

“Basically, Maltravers is a pastiche of movies and commercials on television: James Bond, cigarette commercials, George Sanders, Get Smart and so on.

“The name Maltravers comes from Evelyn Waugh’s “Decline and Fall” – not from the book, but from a film version seen on T.V.

“The humour of these comics is not so much expected to make one laugh, but simply to cause one to smirk.”
