“CLIFF BARNES, creator of Gerald and more latterly noted for his war drawings in 'MAN’ and 'THE INSIDER’. Barnes wandered into Sydney from Adelaide way. 'MAN’ 'found’ him in October, 1937, and said in print at the time: 'A town like this can use a man like this. We predict a big future for him’.”
'Gerald’ is a precocious baby e.g. cartoon of March 1940, 99, shows him in his cot looking at his dishevelled parents in bed, “Gerald, will you please lie down and go to sleep?” That of September 1939, 35 has mother complaining: “It’s something new with him. He won’t start his dinner now without a Dry Martini”.
