The Beaney Institute opened in 1899 and was partly paid for by a legacy of 10,000 pounds from surgeon Dr James Beaney (“Champagne Jimmy”) of Melbourne, who had been born in Canterbury and left money “for the erection and endowment of an institute for working men”.
