professional photographer, was a resident of Carlton, Victoria. The Roman Catholic register of the Melbourne General Cemetery records that Downey, a photographer, died from arsenical colic, aged twenty-seven, and was buried on 20 March 1870. Arsenic was just one of the hazardous chemicals then used in photography.
