sketcher, was born in Tasmania, probably the eldest of the approximately sixteen children of George Stokell (1826-98), a farmer and politician, and his first wife, Alice Stanfield, whom he had married on 26 August 1848. On 21 July 1857 Dora acquired a drawing-book and gradually filled it with pencil sketches, mainly copies of English picturesque cottages, castles, ruins etc. At the back of the book, on separate sheets, are two more finished watercolour views that seem to be original Tasmanian scenes. Dora’s book was given to the Van Diemen’s Land Folk Museum by the later Tasmanian artist, Mabel Hookey .
