Interested in photography from a young age, Barnes exhibited her work in Adelaide and in England. A member of the Adelaide Camera Club, she built her own darkroom in the family garden and developed her own coloured slides.

Working from the family home at St Peters, she built a darkroom in the garden and even developed her own coloured slides. She was a member of the Adelaide Camera Club and exhibited her work in Adelaide and England. Her 1926 photograph, The Close of Day (horses drinking), was purchased by the AGSA that year.
