sketcher, had the watercolour A Select Party included in the 1859 exhibition of the South Australian Society of Arts. At the 1868 exhibition Simpson won a prize for the best copy of a watercolour or chromolithograph. The South Australian Register of 12 December called the head 'a beautiful piece of manipulation’ but added that it was unfortunate that the artist had selected as a model 'a lady with so impossible a mouth’.
