DARTON, Edith Rebecca Trumbull ('Edie’ 1888-1981)
China painter who born in Victoria where she had studied art. She married but soon after her husband was killed in a riding accident and she came to Western Australia to join her sister Ellen Hodgson arriving c.1924. They lived in 8th avenue Maylands, in East Street and in Kirkamill Terrace. By 1931 she was a student of Flora Landells (qv) at her Maylands School of Art. She exhibited in the 1931 exhibition organized by Flora in the Industries Hall Barrack Street. When Lottie Lapsley, Mrs Irving (qv) died in 1936 Edie taught china painting at the Young Women’s Christian Association. There is a lovely lustre compote/vase in private collection in Perth. Her niece was Mattie Hodgson (qv) who ran a photographic studio.
