illustrator and pastoralist, son of Thomas Castle, was born in Clifton, Bristol, Gloucestershire. He came to South Australia in 1839 on board the Moffatt , took up land and later became a magistrate for Hackham. On 13 December 1846 he married Kate Borrow. They had eleven children, five girls and six boys. He died on 29 November 1877 at Strathalbyn, South Australia.
Castle drew scenes of bush life, six of which were published as lithographs by the Pococks of Bristol in the early 1840s: Kangaroo Hunting in South Australia , Bushmen at Camp, Mouth of Salt Creek, South Australia , Hungry Bushmen after Beef, Scene near Maria Creek , Mt. Gambier, S.A. , Scene on the River Murray, S.A. and The Rocky Creek . His view of Salt Creek is an early illustration of an 'outback’ subject.
