Diarist {and sketcher?}, travelled with her husband{?} H.W.G. Payne in the 1870s, including briefly visiting Japan in 1874. She recorded her impressions in a travel diary held by a descendant, Mrs Christine McCracken, edited by Connie Keat and published as Amy’s Diaries: The Travel Notes of Elizabeth Cathcart Payne 1869-1875 (Morwell: La Trobe Valley, self-published 1995). Payne returned to Australia with a small collection of Japanese cdv photographs.
