painter, is believed to have come to Sydney in 1850, the year his Road Side Scene, near Richmond was included in James Grocott’s third art union. Along with other works, it was exhibited at a conversazione in the Royal Hotel in July. The Sydney Morning Herald critic stated that 'the colouring of the landscape is rather raw, but the drawing is admirable, and the cattle are very nicely done’. Referring to an earlier, similar 'scene on the Penrith Road’, the Herald called the artist 'a recent arrival in the colony’.
