Governor of Western Australia, amateur artist and Patron of the West Australian Society of Arts, Bedford was a distinguished naval officer who had served in the Crimea. He, like many naval officers, recorded the places he visited in paint. Although his busy life left little time for this he was a competent artist and painted regularly while he was in Western Australia. An accomplished oil on canvas of the Bathurst lighthouse at Rottnest is owned by the Rottnest Island Board.
