cartoonist and soldier, drew the crude but uncharacteristically gloomy Bulletin original (ML Px*D456/17) signed 'G.V.C. 17’, published 18 April 1917: 'Consolation./ The Victim: “For Gawsake give us a hand digger.”/ Digger: “Aw be patient! there’s a bloke four feet under 'ere ain’t saying nothin’.”’ Verso address 'Pte G.V. Carter 3801/ Bonniedoun/ Beaconsfield Parade/ Middle Park/ Melbourne Vic’.

In early 1917 Carter was recovering in hospital in Britain, having been wounded by shrapnel at Pozières in August 1916, his recovery complicated by the recurrence of a pre-existing ear complaint.
