George Arnold Ball was born on 6 February 1868. He was listed in directories of the time as a school teacher based at Crystal Brook, in South Australia’s north. From the years 1888 to 1892, his directory listing changed in occupation to photographer. George was taught photography by JW Fegan, a man who resided with the Ball family and who convinced him to leave teaching. The pair were later partners in the firm ‘Ball & Fegan’, which was based in Ellen Street in Port Pirie, north of Adelaide, from 1895 to 1900. The company ‘Ball & Co.’ was also listed at this address from 1901 to 1902, to which George was associated. He remained in Port Pirie until sometime during the 1930s, following which, he made a move to Adelaide. In the city he managed a photographic studio.

Arnold Ball, one of George’s sons, was also a photographer, and has described how his father enjoyed photographing babies and children. It is understood that after photographing a family reunion in 1948, George died not long after developing the film and producing several proofs.
