painter and designer, designed a triumphal arch at Yass for a visit by the governor of New South Wales in 1868. A view was engraved for the Illustrated Sydney News and it was described in detail in the Sydney Morning Herald , which stated that Burges had both invented the overall design and painted its various flags and devices. The triple arch had a central span of 15 feet (4.57 m), the two side arches were each 8 feet (2.43 m) wide, and 'across the top of the arch, on both sides, were painted (the letters ornamental and neatly formed) the words welcome to Yass’. Also included in the painted decoration was a crown over a wreath, a coronet, the motto and the Governor’s escutcheon, plus flags, floral festoons and spearheads. 'The “tout ensemble” was effective, well designed, and creditable to the town.’
