painter, was apprenticed to a heraldic painter at Geelong, Victoria, in 1869. On Easter Monday he caught a train from Geelong to Melbourne and disappeared. The only clue to his whereabouts given in the Victoria Police Gazette was: 'Being fond of sketching, he often expressed a wish to go to Mount Macedon to sketch’. A description given to the Geelong police, who were attempting to locate him in October, mentioned that he was seventeen, of average size, weight and colouring but with 'rather long features, rather large and projecting ears, [and] one tooth on each side showing through the upper gum when he smiles’. The notice added that Minchin had left behind all his belongings apart from about 10s 6d, a silver-mounted flute and piccolo, a few tubes of oil paint, some sketches and sketchbooks and 'a small unfinished sea view in oil on mill-board’. No further notices followed.
