painter, worked in Sydney from the mid-1840s to the mid 1850s. He was first listed in Low’s Sydney Directory for 1844-45 as a miniature painter of 169 Elizabeth Street. Later he was at Francis Street, near College Street (sometimes cited as 'Whitefield’ or 'Whitfeld’). A watercolour miniature on ivory portrait, dated 18 March 1845, of Mrs Sterling (née Rachel Turton), wife of a former Sergeant-at-Arms of the NSW Legislative Council and owner of Mosman’s Whaling Station, and her third child, Rachel (born 1844), was sold at Geoff K. Gray’s auction rooms in Sydney on 29 November 1982. It is Whitfield’s only known extant work.
