cartoonist, comic strip artist and book illustrator, was born in Bendigo. After studying art at Bendigo Technical College for 4 years, he moved to Sydney and worked for W.G. Grainger Publications lettering all-colour gravure Disney comics. In 1967 he returned to Melbourne, worked for a printing company and advertising agency and started work on his strip
Brigette, syndicated from 1969 (published in the
Sun Herald 1980). His first comic book,
Wart’s Epic, was self-published in Melbourne in 1970 and distributed to the US by mail order. He began drawing
Devil Doone for K.G. Murray in 1971 and wrote, illustrated and published his own comic books from 1974. His horror comic series
Vampire! was professionally printed for national distribution in 1975. In 1980 he was producing
Brigette for the Sydney
Sun-Herald and published three one-shots in the 1980s –
Brain Master and Vixen,
Fire-Fang (1982) and
Stock Raider. He also did advertising and book illustration. In 1992 he published
Vixen (distributed in Australia and the
USA). In 1992 he won a 'cartoon of the year’ award. His strip
The Dirty Digger first appeared in Southern Aurora’s
Australian War Stories in 1994.
According to Kevin Fletcher (review of
Bonzer ed. A. Shiell in
ABC 109, August 1999, 31-32), Carr has continually self-published a range of science fiction, superhero and horror comics since 1970 and for a time was the only publisher of locally produced comics.
