Originating from the early days of the Tin Sheds, Optronic Kinetics was known for combining the technological and the creative together to create conceptual works of contemporary art. Founding members were Jim McDonell, David Smilth and Julie Ewington. Art critic and educator Donald Brook was also influential in the group, through being one of the key figures in establishing the Tin Sheds fine arts workshop in 1969.

Curated by Terry Smith and Donald Brook, The Situation Now: Object and Post Object Art, was a survey exhibition of conceptual and experimental works in Australia, sponsored by the Contemporary Art Society (CAS) held at Central Street. David Aspden’s work listed in the catalogue was replaced by a work by James Doolin in the exhibition itself.
