Painting with her distinctive white and black crosses on a red ground, Yogngu artist Gulumbu Yunupingu (1945-2012) painted Garak, the starry universe, on barks and poles. She came to national and international prominence with her scaled-up version of Garak for the Musee du quai Branly (2006).
