painter, received a land grant in Sydney in 1825 and is known to have died in 1888. Hoile’s oil on artist board Cockatoo Island, signed and dated 1855, was offered for auction at Sotheby’s 'Fine Australian and European Paintings’, Melbourne, 28-29 April 1998, lot 282, having previously appeared at Christie’s London, February 1973. Another artist named Hoile appears to have worked into the 20th century.
