painter, draughtsman and mining engineer, was shire secretary at Maldon, Victoria, in 1865 when his proposal that the Maldon Market Hall be converted into a shire hall and offices was carried out. His oil, View of the Market Place and Court House, Maldon , apparently dates from just before the conversion. Mitchell’s Duke of Edinburgh Being Piped aboard a Naval Vessel is a souvenir of the royal visit to Victoria in 1867. Both are in the possession of Maldon Shire Council. Mitchell left Victoria in 1869 and settled at Moruya on the south coast of New South Wales. He died at Bondi, Sydney.
