amateur photographer, is said by Davies and Stanbury (in The Mechanical Eye in Australia: Photography 1841-1900) to have taken photographs at Sydney in the 1860s. Captain Hugh Dixon, a distinguished amateur photographer and army officer, was in India about 1864 when he produced an album of photographs of the British Raj. Perhaps he briefly visited New South Wales (though the name is not uncommon).
