painter, showed Portrait of His Excellency Sir C.H. Darling, K.C.B. in the 1864 Annual Exhibition of Fine Arts at Melbourne. The Argus of 2 March commented: 'We are unable to compliment Mr. Phillips on the success of this effort. He has not used his colours injudiciously, and as a work of art the picture has some merit, but the likeness does not seem to be a happy one’.
