painter and professional photographer, showed Sunday Creek, near Seymour in the fourth Annual Exhibition of Fine Arts at Melbourne in 1864. It was described by the Argus critic as 'stiff and chalky’. Two paintings by Tensfield, Lal Lal Falls and Terriers Catching Rats , were exhibited by Richard Geilhofer for sale at the 1863 Ballarat Mechanics Institute Exhibition. Tensfield’s oil painting Main Street, Daylesford (1862, p.c.) appears to have been painted over or from a photograph and it is likely that he was the Tensfield who ran a photographic business at 92 Bourke Street, East Melbourne in 1865, in partnership with H. Freyberger . Newspaper references in Ballarat 1863 are to painter J Tensfeld associated with Solomon and Bardwell and he may the J Tensfeld who photographed in New Zealand in 1882 who produced an album of views and may be an American painter.
