James A. Read's "Punch" covers depicted his local imitation of London's Mr Punch dispensing 'Fun' from 'his inexhaustible bottle'. Read was also accredited for the 'grotesque' figures on the music cover for the quadrille, Volunteers' March, published in January 1855.

artist and wood-engraver, was listed as such at 4 Woolloomooloo Street in Waugh and Cox’s Sydney Directory for 1855. This is presumably the same artist as J.T. Read, who was working from 16 Jamison Street, Sydney, in 1849. Drawings signed 'J.R.’, 'R.’ or 'Read’ in the short-lived Punch; or, the Sydney Charivari (October-December 1856) and its even shorter-lived successor Punch (4 issues only from 3 January 1857) are attributed to him. All four issues of the latter bore Read’s cover (engraved by C. Roper [who was not Edward Roper as cited in DAA ]) showing the local imitation of London’s Mr Punch dispensing 'Fun’ from 'his inexhaustible bottle’. He was probably the Read who did the 'grotesque’ figures on the music cover for the quadrille, Volunteers’ March , published in January 1855.
