cartoonist and illustrator, succeeded J.H. Manly on the Hobart Town Punch after 1 February 1868 (when Manly’s last cartoons appeared) until the paper’s demise, according to notes written by James Backhouse Walker , one of the magazine’s major contributors and organisers. The only known surviving copy, however, is for 15 February 1868 and the full-page cartoon is unsigned (probably illus. Craig 1980), although there is no suggestion that it was the final number; indeed, future issues were confidently implied. Rule also seems to be the ' JR ' who drew Mosquito in 1868.
