Younger sister of Lucky Kngwarraye, born approximately 1958, Janice Kngwarreye is an Alyawarre speaker who began painting in the summer of 1988-9 as part of the second CAAMA project with the Utopia artists: The First Works on Canvas . She has also done some batik and inventively carved wooden sculptures. Her country is Ngkawenyerre, on Alyawarre/Kaytetye Aboriginal land north of the Utopia area near Ngwarlerlaneme. Her Dreamings are Rainbow, Tjarpa Lanait (Witchetty), Edible Snake and Wild Fig. She is married to Wally Pwerle, who is known for his wood-carving. The two occasionally paint together.
