Painter and craftworker, did a five year art diploma course at East Sydney Technical College. She had a studio in Sydney where she produced textile designs and paintings, then went to London and studied for three years at Westminster School under Mark Gertler (recently deceased). After visiting Paris and the Luxembourg Galleries she was inspired to try sculpture after seeing 73 year-old Maillol’s The Cyclist . She returned to London and took lessons from the sculptor Eric Schilsky for four months, exhibiting the results at the 1938 Glasgow Exhibition. Back at London she also started toymaking – dolls and animals. In 1939 she exhibited in the dolls and toys section of the annual exhibition of the NSW Society of Arts and Crafts and was aiming to combine fine art with commercial art. Although concentrating on 'fine art’, toy and doll making remained 'a bread and butter hobby’ ( SMH 14 September 1939).
