Jean South of the Wailwan people of north west NSW has been exhibiting her work since 1990, when she was part of the exhibition Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow at the Sydney Opera House. Her work has hung in exhibitions at Tin Sheds Gallery in Chippendale, Penrith Regional Art Gallery & Lewers Bequest and the Australian Museum in Sydney.

Awarded a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) from the University of Western Sydney in 1990, South has been a finalist in the 2005, 2006 and 2007 Parliament of NSW Indigenous Art Prize.
