Born near Yumari, west of Kintore across the WA border, Jimmy grew up walking the bush until he was ten or twelve years old before his family migrated east. He was one of those involved in the early Pintupi exodus to Yai Yai, an outstation of Papunya. Though a relatively young man, he was elected Chairman of the Kiwirrkura Council in the late 1980s. He began painting for Papunya Tula Artists at Kiwirrkura and described himself when interviewed in 1989 as 'still learning’ to paint on canvas. His work depicts Tingari stories from around Yumari.
