Originally arriving in Australia for the gold rush, John Bell eventually settled in Bendigo and taught modelling and oil painting at the newly opened Sandhurst School of Design.

painter, art teacher and gold-digger, came to Victoria in the 1850s from his native city, Glasgow, Scotland, and searched for gold at Ballarat. In 1861 he moved to Sandhurst (Bendigo) where he painted a banner for the Loyal Industry Lodge of the Manchester Unity Order of Odd Fellows; the lodge showed this at the 1861 Victorian Exhibition, Melbourne. When the Sandhurst School of Design opened in 1871 Bell taught modelling and oil painting there.
