illustrator and engraver, was born in Victoria. He began his career in 1891 as a wood engraver for John Fairfax and worked as a staff artist on the Sydney Mail . The Grafton Galleries’ 'Exhibition of Australian Art in London’ 1898 included 'J. Hall-Thorpe, The Society of Artists, Sydney, cat.257, Castlereagh Street, Sydney , cat.259. Centennial Park Gates , cat. 260, The Synagogue, Sydney , and others (all apparently paintings).’ He worked as a commercial and newspaper artist in England from 1902.
