sketcher, missionary and Methodist minister, was born in Yorkshire in March 1792. He arrived at Hobart Town in the Ann on 16 May 1823. In October he moved to Sydney to train as a minister, having converted to Methodism after being raised in the Church of England. Ordained in Sydney on 25 April 1826 and married at Parramatta eight days later to Mary Oakes, Hutchinson was sent as a missionary to Tonga. Returning after two years, he worked at Windsor, New South Wales, until sent to Hobart Town in 1830, apparently as minister to the Van Diemen’s Land Company.

Drawings initialled 'J.H.H.’ formerly in the possession of the company (State Library of Tasmania) are attributed to him. All date from about 1830 and include View from the West of the V.D.L. Co.'s Establishment at H. Hills in 1830 (pencil), Circular Head; from Brush Cottage (pencil and w/c) and V.D.L. Co.'s Establishment at Emu Bay, from East 1830 (pencil). An unsigned and undated sketch of the company’s holdings in the papers of G.A. Robinson is apparently also his.

In 1831 Hutchinson took up a land grant at Morven and retired from the ministry but was superintendent of the Hobart Town Female House of Correction in 1832-51. He died at Hobart on 7 May 1866.
