art student, won the prize ('a very handsome picture-frame’) for the best drawing from nature or a cast in the Society of Arts’ third annual exhibition at Adelaide in 1859. Holden also exhibited a scroll-work copy and was undoubtedly a pupil at the South Australian School of Design under Charles Hill , both being set subjects in the curriculum.
