John Hunt (1932–) began studying at Sydney Technical College in 1949 and graduated from the same course from the renamed University of Technology at Kensington in 1954. During his studies, he worked at Trenchard Smith and Maisey, then spent time with the Sydney County Council drawing office, (Colin) Smith and (Cliff) Johnson, Eric Daniels, Eric Parker and Bruce S. Smith and RAL Green. In 1956, he joined Douglas Snelling’s practice at Bellevue Hill as his senior associate. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he moonlighted as designer of numerous houses; including the Thompson house, Seaforth (1962) and the Turnock house, West Pymble (1963). In 1964, he left Snelling’s office to form a partnership with Lindsay Payne. Payne and Hunt combined their practice with Harold Smith and Robert Jesse in 1976. Hunt’s largest project as designer was Simsmetal House, St Leonards (1972) and he worked on documenting Kentucky Fried Chicken, Black Stump and Pizza Hut fast food restaurants. He retired from the practice in 1999.
