John James Clarke

John James Clarke was a watercolorist and architect. He was appointed Colonial Architect in Queensland in 1883 but was sacked in 1885. He and his son E. J. Clark won the competition to design a children's hospital.

Watercolorist and architect who won an award for architectural drawings at an international exhibition. Clarke was appointed Colonial Architect in Queensland in 1883 but was sacked in 1885.

He came to work as a draughtsman at the PWD in Perth in 1896 but only lasted until the end of 1897. He and his son E. J. Clark won the competition to design a children’s hospital. In 1898 Clarke exhibited paintings of Victoria with the West Australian Society of Arts. These were considered “decidedly above the average, and moreover, belong to the old school of colourists. They bear unmistakable evidence of a trained and matured hand.”

His address was 7 Arcade Chambers, Barrack Street, Perth as was his son E. J. Clark. They returned to Victoria by 1903 where they were in partnership.
