John Joseph Wardell Power was a painter, author, patron and philanthropist. His colourful, abstract compositions reflect a life of leisure and 1920s modernity, theatre, music, the seaside and landscapes. His most prolific period spans the late 1920s to early 1930s. In Australia Power is most widely recognised as the benefactor of the 'Power Bequest'. This gift established the Power Institute of Fine Arts.
The Power Bequest is celebrating the 50 year anniversary this year. Coinciding with the 'new' MCA and porposed Sydney University exhibition programmed for October 2012 I felt it was necessary for JW Power, the artist, to be celebrated in his country of birth. -
