sketcher, cartographer and naval officer, was captain of the convict transport Scarborough in the First Fleet. He drew one of the seven maps reproduced in The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay (London 1789). The Rienits point out that 'embodied in this chart are seventeen small coastal profiles and these, although crudely drawn, establish that Marshall had at least some slight artistic ability’. They therefore suggest that he may have drawn the original sketches which the English marine artist Robert Cleveley used to produce the illustrations for Phillip’s book (but see James Cleveley ). Marshall made a second trip to New South Wales, again commanding the Scarborough , arriving at Port Jackson on 28 June 1790.
