John Russell was an Australian Impressionist painter who lived and worked in France for many years, befriending his fellow students, including the impoverished Vincent Van Gogh. With his wife and model Marianna, he settled at Belle-Île-en-Mer off the coast of Brittany which became the subject of much of his painting. He came to know and admired Claude Monet and mentored the young Henri Matisse.
