Amateur photographer and scientist, a professor at the University of Sydney, also active in a number of social issues such as water, tertiary education for women and public elementary education. His photographs consist of portraits, geological subjects, local views and the University, and unlike most studio portraits of the time, he attempted to relate his subjects to their environment.
