professional photographer and draughtsman, was appointed official photographer on the Goyder expedition to the Northern Territory. The party left Adelaide in the Moonta in December 1868, Brooks having been appointed over Samuel Sweet . On the voyage north Brooks advertised in the ship’s (handwritten) newspaper, the Moonta Herald and Northern Territory Gazette, that he was sole supplier of 'cheap photographs’. When the party landed at Port Darwin on 5 February 1869 Brooks took several photographs of the coastline and of the planned site of Darwin township. These were sent back to Adelaide in the Moonta with Goyder’s despatches. However, he became increasingly burdened with the preparation of plans and documents for the surveyors and both he and his assistant, W. Barlow , were effectively supplanted as the expedition photographer by Sweet (who had turned up as captain of the supply ship).
