painter, had an oil painting, The Old Mill , in the 1869 Melbourne Public Library Exhibition. He exhibited it again that year at the Ballarat Mechanics Institute, along with 12 other oils. All his subjects were European and British landscapes, including Castle on the Rhine and View in Wales . By 1873 he was showing his oil painting The Glen at Bondi in Sydney at the New South Wales Academy of Art’s second exhibition. According to the Sydney Mail , it represented 'with much success, and with all the marvellous minuteness of the pre-Raffaelite (sic) school, a well-known spot in Mr Fletcher’s pleasure grounds. This is a capital picture and deserves more attention from the visitor than it is likely to get, as it hangs in rather a bad light; one of the few pictures of which that can fairly be said.’

Boyd continued to show oil landscape paintings with the academy, mainly local and Scottish scenes, e.g. View near Bondi and Ruins of Balquhine, Chapel of Garioch, Aberdeenshire , as well as a few copies ( The Lonely Ocean ). Most of his Australian views were of Bondi.
