Furphy made doors to fit his daughter-in-law Mattie Furphy's metalwork, which are now in Tom Collins House Swanbourne plus the surrounds and overmantel for the fireplace.
Writer Joseph Furphy (pseudonym Tom Collins) was the author of Such is Life. He was also an amateur woodworker.
Furphy moved to Western Australia in 1905 to join his sons who had set up a foundry in Fremantle. Joseph built his home in Swanbourne and helped his sons with theirs. He also made a pair of chairs with studded leather seats, plus a cabinet in jarrah with carved door panels. He made doors to fit his daughter-in-law Mattie Furphy’s metalwork, which are now in Tom Collins House Swanbourne plus the surrounds and over-mantel for the fireplace. It is possible he also carved the detailing to the plate rails of Sam & Mattie Furphy House, Swanbourne c.1905-11.
