After lengthy negotiations by expedition leader Alessandro Malaspina, Juan Ravenet finally joined his friend in 1791 as resident figure painter on his voyage.

figure painter, son of Juan Francisco Ravenet, engraver to the young Duke of Parma and professor of engraving at the Parma Academy of Fine Arts, and Angelica, née Bunel, was baptised on 29 March 1766 in the English church at Parma, Italy.
