Mandandanji descendant, Laurie Nilsen was born in Queensland in 1953. A member of the Brisbane based Campfire Group and the ProppaNow Artist Cooperative, Nilsen has work in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Australia, the Museum of Victoria, the National Gallery of Australia and the Queensland Museum.
He has shown in a number of group exhibitions including 'Black Humour’ in 1996 at the Canberra Contemporary Art Space and the 2nd Asia Pacific Triennal at Queensland Art Gallery. Nilsen has also been a finalist in the 5th Indigenous Heritage Art Award – 'The Art of Place’ in Canberra in 2000. Nilsen was the winner of the Wandjuk Marika 3D Memorial Award at the 2007 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards with his piece, Goolburris on the Bungil Creek .
